Why Cultural Workers' Union

An article explaining the founding purpose, vision, and reason for existence of the Cultural Workers' Union.

The Culture Workers' Union (Kültür Emek-Sen) was founded to protect and advance the rights of workers in culture and the arts, and to be an organised voice in this field.

The artists, musicians, dancers, and technical and administrative staff working in culture and art institutions face precarious working conditions, low wages, arbitrary practices and anti-union pressure. Overcoming these problems requires collective organisation.

As Kültür Emek-Sen, we stand for:

— Secure, permanent employment for culture and art workers — Fair wages and social rights that match their labour — A democratic, participatory and transparent approach to governance — The protection of art and culture as a public value, free from commercialisation — Every worker's right to join a union and take part in union activity

Kültür Emek-Sen is an independent, democratic union on the side of labour. It is accountable not to large bureaucratic structures, but to its members and to all culture workers.

Together we are stronger.
