Ankara Sanat Tiyatrosu's season repertoire: Four plays that question labor, unemployment and power

This season, Ankara Sanat Tiyatrosu (AST) is staging four plays at its Bilkent Center stage: Accidental Death of an Anarchist, The Generals' Tea Party, Second-Degree Unemployment Burn and The Dishwashers.

Ankara Sanat Tiyatrosu (AST) features four plays in its season repertoire. Together they draw a line from state violence to the war economy, and from skilled unemployment to the workers who earn their living by the sweat of their brow in the kitchen.

Bir Anarşistin Kaza Sonucu Ölümü (Accidental Death of an Anarchist)

  • —Written by: Dario Fo
  • —Translated by: Füsun Demirel
  • —Directed by: Hakan Güven
  • —Cast: Mahir İpek, Mehmet Ulusoy, Yıldırım Şimşek, Çağlar Deniz, Hazal Pekgöz, Boray İsabetli

Nobel laureate Dario Fo's play is set in Milan in 1969: a bomb explodes near Piazza del Duomo and 16 people lose their lives, the anarchist Pinelli is found dead in police custody, and the police declare his death "accidental." Fo builds a black comedy out of the interrogation scenes.

Generallerin Beş Çayı (The Generals' Tea Party)

  • —Written by: Boris Vian
  • —Translated by: Ayberk Erkay
  • —Directed by: Hakan Güven
  • —Cast: Mehmet Ulusoy, Funda Mete, Yıldırım Şimşek, Şenol Kaderoğlu, Çağlar Deniz, Altan Alkan, Hakan Güven

In post-World War II France, a prime minister looking for a way out of economic crisis finds the answer in dragging the country into war. Boris Vian satirizes the notions of war, responsibility and power.

İkinci Dereceden İşsizlik Yanığı (Second-Degree Unemployment Burn)

  • —Written by: Ali Cüneyd Kılcıoğlu
  • —Directed by: Elif Erdal
  • —Cast: Berkay Tulumbacı

AST's new play tells the story of skilled unemployment as a "so-called one-person black comedy." Its themes include the 2001 economic crisis, political change, social pressure and unemployment.

Bulaşıkçılar (The Dishwashers)

  • —Written by: Morris Panych
  • —Directed by: Funda Mete
  • —Cast: Şenol Kaderoğlu, Yıldırım Şimşek, Çağlar Deniz

Bringing the invisible heroes of everyday life to the stage, the play follows workers who earn their living by the sweat of their brow amid the dirty, greasy dishes sent down from upstairs.
